| Whether a Construction Management System receives data from an internal or external source, the most critical aspect of such data is that it be accurate and stable, since it is part and parcel of the entire business operational package and overall business health and welfare. The jury is still out as to the advantages or disadvantages to either methodology; in my opinion, deciding whether to keep a function internal or hire it out to providers of the service depends greatly on a variety of factors, including (but not limited to) the following : Size of company - Number of departments - Number of employees - Overall budget - Overall business management savvy of employees - Federal, State, local regulation impacts - Availability of reputable outside resources for services needed - Other similar business parameters Construction companies must pay close attention to payroll influences on construction project profits. Without up-to-the-minute, real-time project activity data being fed into a stable, robust data collection system, companies run the risk of ultimately mismanaging projects and taking the resulting losses. In other words, the more accurate and up to date the Construction Management System information is, better the ability to manage projects and business to perfection. Of course, no business or project ever runs at perfection level, but the goal of any ambitious, credible and reputable Construction company is certainly to attain to as close to perfect as they can; to operate as effectively and efficiently as possible. Good Construction Management software systems should provide all the tools necessary to tweak and improve on Construction business procedures and practices, toward that elusive target of perfection in managing the overall business. The hard part, of course, is for the user community to become avidly and eagerly engaged in using those tools to their intended best advantages. It is imperative to thoroughly train all Construction Management System users in the proper use and input strategies; including such things as common keywords, system protocols, data standards, and the like. Users need to understand the broad view as well. Users need to know just how important accurate payroll updates are to the entire business' health and welfare. They need to know how important any Federal, State or local regulations and reporting requirements are. They need to be familiarized with all business facets, so they can learn how their particular input causes a ripple-effect to the whole entity. That said, it behooves Construction companies to ensure that their operational protocols are where they need to be for current best-practice functionality. That way, the marriage between the Construction company practices and the Construction Management System will be robust and will provide a solid platform for positive improvement going forward. |
